Making the Leap Into Color

I've been makingg a conscious effort lately to use color in my pieces, and to create more "finished" works of art. Here are my two most recent finished pieces.

The horse was a birthday gift for my mom. Or rather, will be a birthday gift for my mom - I haven't actually had it printed yet. Full size, it will be 2 feet by 1 foot.

These look amazing!

On the first: Another big jump for you, the color really gives it a new dimension. Great job on the angle of the lighting. I especially like greenish highlights. Wrinkles look good too. Keep in mind what type of shapes to use when drawing the female face. The lines flanking her mouth makes her seem older or heavier and the pronounced chin gives her a masculine quality.

On the second: Great choice of angle. It looks like the types of lines you use really work when describing the texture of the horse's surface, but not when drawing a human. Did yo use reference? I also dig the cell-shaded look. The background could be less abstract, but it still looks good.

My only real beef is the angle of the cake, it seems off. I imagine that you could see a bit of the top, which would give you a chance to write something on the cake i.e. "Happy Birthday".

Good work!
